Bandon school bus crashes near end of long trip
By KPIC NewsBANDON, Ore. - A school bus carrying the Bandon girls basketball team crashed just north of Bandon as the bus was returning home after a trip to Rogue River early Saturday morning. Oregon State Police troopers say the crash happened just after midnight, just a few miles from Bandon. The bus driver was transported with non-life threatening injuries, but none of the others on the bus was taken to the hospital. Police got the call just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning of a crash involving the school bus on Highway 101 near milepost 255 north of Bandon. The bus was driven by Sandra Klein, 60, of Bandon. Police said the bus was southbound when Klein lost control negotiating a curve at the bottom of a hill. The bus traveled off the roadway onto the southbound shoulder and went up an embankment, knocking down a highway sign. It continued across both lanes and crashed into the highway guardrail on the northbound shoulder. It came to rest on top of the crushed guardrail. Klein was not using safety restraints and was thrown from the driver's seat. She was transported by ambulance to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay with minor injuries. Other minor injuries were reported but none of the 14 students or two coaches went to a hospital. Some family members came to the scene and took their students back to Bandon. Others returned on a second bus that was dispatched to the scene by school district officials. The bus had significant front end damage and was towed back to Bandon. Most Popular
