Sheriff: Parolee with long history of violence moving to Curry County
By Tim Novotny KCBY NewsGOLD BEACH, Ore. - A man who has spent a lifetime on the wrong side of the law is coming to Curry County, and Curry County Sheriff John Bishop wants to spread the word in the name of safety. Citing an opportunity to enhance public safety and protection, Bishop issued a press release stating that 69-year-old Gary Douglas Caughey is being released March 19 from the Oregon State Penitentiary. Bishop said that state law requires that Caughey reside in Curry County and be supervised by Curry County Parole and Probation. He said Caughey has served the last 23 years in prison for kidnapping after forcing a 17-year-old girl into his car at knife-point. Court documents show that he committed that crime on the very day that he had been paroled after serving the previous eight years for kidnapping two children from a parking lot in Nebraska. Prior to that, Caughey had been convicted of another kidnapping and rape in 1973. The 6-2, 190 pound man is designated as a sex offender but not considered a predatory sex offender. That is a designation that Bishop disagrees with but said he understands that the Department of Corrections was only following state law in deciding on that designation. Bishop said he is not releasing this information to spark fear but rather because he believes an informed public is a safer public. Most Popular
