COOS BAY, ORE - The sign out front still read "Future home of the Coos Bay Boat Building Center," but the official Grand Opening on June 26th proves that the future is now for the Center.

There is still some facade work to be done, to give it a nice Cannery Row look to it, but make no doubt about it, the Boat Building Center is open for business.

Running the Grand Opening in connection with Empire's Clamboree Festival for maximum exposure, crowds flowed through the building in a steady stream

Chairman of the Board of Director's for the Boat Building Center Jim Berg says they're looking to do a little commerce and a little education at the site. "The goal is to have this be an attractive feature for the community and for the Empire District of Coos Bay. We're hoping this is going to be an economic help."

The education part is not only teaching folks how to sail, with on-site boats donated for the cause, but also picking up where some of the local schools have had to leave off due to budget cuts.

Of course, they'll be doing some building as well says Berg, "Some of these can be accomplished in as little as a week or else we might provide support to somebody building a boat that takes longer. And we'll also have classes and programs that would take care of things like safe woodworking and that sort of thing for school children, since we don't really have so many shop programs as we used to have."

According to Berg, it will ultimately be the human equation that will make the Center a success, as they rely heavily on membership and community participation.

They currently offer a Charter Membership program for $100, but standard adult membership will be $25, with other memberships for Seniors and kids.
