CHARLESTON, Ore. -- Crabbers in Charleston are preparing for crab season, but their pots will be empty for at least a couple more weeks.
According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the crabs are not meaty enough to harvest.
But some crabbers in Charleston don't seem to be worried about it.
Joe Fisher is a deckhand on the “Patriot.” He says, “We gotta fish when the crab are right. It hurts our pocketbooks, but you gotta do what you gotta do.”
Fisher says he hopes they'll get more money for their crab if they wait, to make up for the shorter season.
The crabs in Charleston are ready to harvest, but those just north and south still need to grow, so the entire Oregon Coast has been closed.
Danny Kutsch is a commercial crabber on the “Steigen.” He says the delay is a good thing.
“If the crab was soft up above and down below, it's a good thing,” said Kutsch.
As long as no one can go crabbing, Kutsch says he's fine with it, "‘Cuz someone would jump the gun, for sure.”
The two crabbers say they're lucky they have other jobs on the side, so they won't be affected as much as some.
Right now it looks like the season will start by Dec. 16.
Once a third round of testing is done in late November or early December, we will know more about where and when crabbing will be allowed.
