Sinkhole opens up in Sizzler parking lot

Sinkhole opens up in Sizzler parking lot

NORTH BEND, Ore. -- A sinkhole opened up in the parking lot of the Sizzler at 3390 Broadway in North Bend on Monday.

North Bend street crews spent most of Monday and Tuesday repairing a broken pipe at the bottom of the hole and filling it in with asphalt.

North Bend City Administrator Terence O'Connor says unlike the ones making news in the southern parts of the country, this sinkhole was man made, caused by old pipes. "A corrugated metal pipe that eventually gave way, it had been in the ground for probably more than 40 years," he said.

Though the hole may look large, it was actually about a third of that size. Crews had to make it bigger so they could fix the broken pipe.

Officials say the sinkhole was around 5-6 feet deep, and they had to dig a hole about 16 feet deep to repair it.
