It's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when"
SOUTH COAST, Ore.- It's not a matter of "if" a tsunami will hit our coast line, it's a matter of "when".
That's why a community based program is ramping up efforts to educate Oregonians.
Tsunami Outreach Oregon is all about preparedness.
This program educates community members on how to prepare themselves, and their families, for an earthquake and tsunami.
Coordinator with Tsunami Outreach Oregon, Lindsey Bishop, tells KCBY- Oregon is beyond the 300 year mark for a Cascadia Subduction Zone event, and the recent tsunami in Japan is evidence Oregonians need to prepare.
"It gave the community a sense of immediacy that this is going to happen. In Charleston there was $600,000 worth of damage. So people need to be aware that this is going to happen; and we can do our best to prepare and that involves knowing what to do when an earthquake happens" says Bishop.
A community rally is set to take place March 22nd at 6:30 p.m. over at the North Bend Community Center.
Here local emergency preparedness organizations and speakers from the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries will teach community members how to prepare, look at new Inundation Maps and brochures, and get more information about the Mass Tsunami Community Evacuation Drill coming in May.
"We chose to have it on May 31st at 2 p.m. so that the children can be involved because we really need to teach our children how to prepare for a local earthquake and tsunami. Our charge is to create a sustainable program and we do that by educating our children" continues Bishop.
