SYDNEY (AP) - A tsunami of .9 meters (3 feet) was measured in the Solomon Islands after a strong earthquake in the South Pacific.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the tsunami was measured in Lata in the easternmost Solomon Islands. The tsunami damaged dozens of homes in that South Pacific island chain.

However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says that tsunami warnings for elsewhere have been cancelled.

The National Weather Service says there is no threat of a tsunami in Hawaii, Alaska or the U.S. West Coast after a powerful earthquake struck in the South Pacific.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says some areas of the West Coast may see changes in sea levels but it would not be damaging.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 8.0-magnitude quake struck Wednesday 81 kilometers (50 miles) west of Lata, in the Solomon Islands, at a depth of 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles.)
