COQUILLE, ORE - Low-income families on the South Coast would be the winners if Coos County is awarded a Community Development Block Grant. A hearing held in Coquille on December 31st identified the greatest source of need.

Since only cities or counties are allowed to apply for this specific type of grant Coos County agreed to be the applicant for Oregon Coast Community Action.

The Block Grant is a federal fund which will be used, if awarded to Coos County, for a new community food resource building on property on LaClair Street in Coos Bay. It is part of ORCCA's community campus project.

The project vision consists of a three building community campus that would also include a new place for Head Start.

While the County would be writing the checks from the Grant money, it would be Oregon Coast Community Action that would really be spending them.

Coos County Commissioner Nikki Whitty adds, "we would be the applicant, receive the money, watch over the project until it's finished and then, at a certain time, transfer everything back over to Community Action."

At last month's public hearing in Coquille, CEO of ORCCA Mary Shoen-Clark expressed her appreciation for the County's support on this project and estimated that it would also stimulate the economy with jobs and also add a bigger food bank.
