Commercial crab season gets December 15th go-ahead

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says fishery managers met this week and decided that the crab would be ready by December 15th, but not for the entire Oregon Coast.

The season will open from just north of Gold Beach to the Columbia River, Gold Beach to the south will have to wait until January 15th.

The season, which typically starts on December 1st, was delayed because pre-season quality testing of the crab meet showed it did not meet minimum requirements.

Testing measures the percentage of meat in the crab by weight, and is done to ensure a high quality product.

Commercial crabbers will be allowed to set their gear three days before the season opens, so expect the boats to head-out with their gear as early as Monday morning.
