Officials: N. Bend streets a hassle now, but it will be worth it

NORTH BEND, Ore. -- Commuters traveling through downtown North Bend found it difficult to get through street closures the last couple of days.

Pacific Power has the westbound lanes of Virginia Avenue between Sheridan and Meade Streets closed to complete maintenance on power poles.

Lanes will be closed until sometime Wednesday, and it will be just the beginning.

The maintenance they are completing is a prelude to the street-scape project the city is working on to beatify downtown.

Terence O'Connor, the city administrator for North Bend, says the area will be improved. "A year from now, this downtown core area will look remarkably different, and all for the better," O'Connor said. "We are trying to assist the business owners in trying to make it a more pedestrian friendly environment."

The street-scape project will add new light poles, benches and trees to the downtown area.

Most of the project will be completed by this summer, and initial construction will begin in as soon as two weeks.
