Yes, kids get headaches, too
By Herb WeisbaumWith all the pressures we experience, whether at work or stuck in traffic, it's not surprising that every now and then the pounding pain of a headache strikes. But you might be surprised at just how common headaches are in children. "Ten percent of children suffer from migraine headaches," says Dr. Kenneth Mack, a pediatric neurologist at Mayo Clinic. "Probably a higher percentage suffers from tension-type headaches. Fortunately, most of these children will have infrequent headaches." While the pressures may be different, Dr. Mack says there are factors in a child's environment that can make headaches more frequent. "I think review of the typical environmental triggers, such as sleep and busy schedule and missing meals are very important in trying to understand what precipitates or brings on a headache." A child's headache is usually not serious, but it can be caused by an infection. That's why it's important to pay attention to your child's headache symptoms and to consult a doctor if the headache worsens or occurs frequently. For more information Most Popular |
