Flight canceled? Head to the phone, not the counter

SEATTLE -- Whenever you travel -- especially when your trip involves getting there by air -- things can go wrong.

Let's say your flight is canceled. What do you do -- race to the service desk to book another flight? That could take hours.

Sue Perry with Shop Smart magazine says your best bet is to get on the phone and call the airline's reservation line or your travel agent.

"Because it may be quicker than waiting in line in a customer service counter," she said. "You might be able to get somebody helping you faster doing it that way."

If you belong to an airline lounge, go there and ask them to rebook your flight. If you're an elite frequent flier or are flying on a full fare ticket, you have a little more clout. Let them know that -- in a nice way, of course.

"It could help you get freebies like phone cards, a meal or a hotel voucher," Perry said.

Keep in mind, the airline is not responsible for things beyond its control -- bad weather, erupting volcanoes, war, acts of terrorism, even some mechanical problems. So don't expect free room or meal ticket just because your flight is canceled.
