Fruit vs. fruit juice: They are not equals
You need to eat more fruit. We hear the advice all the time, and it's true.
Just remember, fruit does not mean fruit juice; they're not the same.
"Fruit comes in its own perfect package. It's got fiber. It has antioxidants. It's low-calorie and it has a lot of water. So when
we turn that fruit into a glass of juice, something has to get lost in that transition and what usually gets lost is vitamins and what gets gained is a ton on calories."
I asked Certified Nutritionist Deborah Enos, also known as "The One-Minute Wellness Coach", to compare a whole orange with a glass of orange juice.
"An orange may have 70 to 80 calories, depending on the size. But a glass of orange juice has somewhere between 200 and 400 calories. You also lose the fiber.
"An apple has 4 grams of fiber, which is fantastic. But a glass of apple juice actually has zero grams of fiber. And in some cases, it has more calories per ounce than drinking a soda pop."
Keep in mind -- the calorie count also goes way up when fruit is dried. That's why it's so tasty.
"It will literally quadruple the calories when you take an apricot and turn it into a dried apricot or from grapes to raisins, because it's so concentrated. And most food manufacturers do add in more sugar."
So eat more fruits and vegetables - fresh fruits and vegetables.
