Oldest known photo of Sumpter, shot in 1895. The town was platted in 1889 by Charles Rimbol. There were about 200 people living in Sumpter in 1895. In 1898, after the hardrock gold mining boom started, the town was incorporated. By 1903 the town's population had soared to 3,500. Photo courtesy Baker County Library, Baker City, Oregon
