COOS BAY, Ore. -Bringing hunger awareness to the table, the South Coast Food Share is inviting the community to get involved in food drives and fundraisers, during their week long celebration of food and nutrition.

Rollie Lobsinger with the Food Share, appeared in front of the Coos Bay City Council Tuesday evening, asking Mayor Jeff McKeown to sign the Proclamation for South Coast Hunger Awareness Week, that's scheduled for July 4-11.

In the past fiscal year, Coos County alone has seen an increase of more than 1,000 families requesting emergency food boxes, says Lobsinger, which has prompted them to kick off one of their biggest fundraisers to date.

This week long event will offer activities in nutrition, farming, dancing and dining out, not to mention the 40 food drive barrels currently placed throughout the South Coast.

Lobsinger says it's about bringing the community together with everyone's common denominator, food.

"It's at every social event , it's at every function.  It has everything to do with health and feelings of security and feelings of hope in a family.  So Hunger Awareness Week is about making people aware of what's happening, what the need it and the bad news, but it's also a celebration about food."

Again, South Coast Hunger Awareness Week is July 4-11.
