Do Coos County kids have a drinking problem?

COOS COUNTY, Ore. -- In a statewide student wellness study, 30% of Coos County teens in 6th, 8th and 12th grades are reporting they use alcohol.

Organizations like the Coos County Youth Council are working to teach prevention techniques and strategies to students.

They say the kids need options other than just saying "No" to drugs and alcohol. "Instead of just saying 'No, this isn't good for you,' we're trying to figure out, what is the yes? What are our students and kids in Coos County supposed to say yes to? So, getting involved in organized sports, getting involved in music, getting involved in theater and getting involved in any kind of outdoor activity," said Barbara Bassett, the youth council director.

The youth council works with 8-12 grade students in Coos County.
