VENETA, Ore. - A 32-year-old man died when his car crossed into oncoming traffic on Highway 126 Thursday morning and a semi truck head-on.
State police identified the driver of the car Sunday afternoon as Margarito Roque-Morones, 32, of Veneta. Investigators are still not sure why Roque-Morones crossed the center line at around 8 a.m. Thursday into oncoming traffic on Highway 126.
Police said that Roque-Morones' Honda hit a westbound truck head-on about 3 miles east of Veneta. The truck was towing an empty semi-trailer.
Roque-Morones was pronounced dead at the scene. Crash investigators said he was only using the shoulder strap part of a seat belt, not the lap belt.
The driver of the semi, 43-year-old Randy R. Foster of Harrisburg, was unable to avoid the crash, officials reported. Foster was taken to the hospital by ambulance and treated for minor injuries. He was driving for Lane County Public Works, Oregon State Police said.
The crash and cleanup closed the highway for 4 hours. A hazmat crew took preventative steps to prevent any fluids from the wreckage from reaching Fern Ridge Reservoir, state police said.
