It was a day to serve their community and help one another.
This weekend, the Refuge Church of God in downtown Coos Bay held it's 5th annual "Backpack/school supply giveaway."

From 10 in the morning til 4 PM, families came and went from the church, armed with school supplies and other free goodies.
Kids got to pick up a free backpack filled with paper, pencils, crayons and glue sticks and then played around on inflatable jumps.

Pastor Tom Osborne says church-goer's rally behind events like this.

"Our church has really gotten behind the vision of this. We've seen over the last few years that it's been something that's really helpful for the community, especially right now with the economy the way that it is. We just wanted to do something that was meaningful."

Osborne and his wife, Ann, have watched the event grow over the past five years.
This year, 300 backpacks were given away to get kids ready for school. The Osborne's say the need for community outreach along the South Coast is great.

"The more that we've advertised for it, and the more we try to get the word out, the more people have come," says Osborne. "So we've just tried to keep up with it."

The Refuge Church of God is located on second street in downtown Coos Bay.
