An open house high atop Bunker Hill was how firefighters and community members celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Coos Forest Patrol.

Firefighters opened up the compound for their second annual open house.
A barbeque, ice cream, games, coloring and visit from Smokey Bear delighted the children that were there.

Brett Weidemiller, with the Coos Forest Patrol, says there was something for everyone.

"Our museum is open, and our tower is open, we've got stuff for adults as well," says Weidemiller. "If anyone has questions about incinerator barrels or campfires, we have folks that can answer those questions for them and we have homeowner information for them, we can answer any questions regarding that as well."

The Coos Forest Patrol is one of the oldest fire protection organizations in Oregon.
Created back in 1910, the nonprofit agency fights fires on more than 1.5 million acres of local land.
Despite that, Weidemiller says, many resident's are unfamiliar with the coos forest patrol.

"Some folks, we respond but they don't really know who we are," says Weidemiller. "So this is kind of an opportunity for them to come up, look at our facility, look at some of our equipment and look at Smokey Bear and just kind of get to know us a little bit more and make that connection between us and the public a little bit tighter."

Forest Patrol headquarters are located at the top of Bay Park Hill in Bunker Hill.
