Slow down for School Zones
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore. -Students are all too aware what next week brings, but are motorists? The influx of children that will be coming to and from class will be seen on the roadways and drivers are expected to slow down in designated areas. All school zones are 20 miles per hour, but they do vary on what times of the day they are enforced. Some will have flashing lights, while others include anytime school is in session, but the most common is when children are present. According to Captain Cal Mitts with Coos Bay Police, "The younger children are definitely more vulnerable and drivers really need to be watching the areas of the elementary schools most importantly. Basic rule of thumb is probably up until about 4 or 5 in the afternoon there are some sports programs that continue in the event, and there could be some kids out on the streets at that time." Mitts says officers will be enforcing the school zones but that, that's not the only offense they'll be targeting this Fall. "There are two different grant opportunities, providing some extra enforcement for this time of year. One is concentrating on seat belts and child safety equipment and there will also be some extra DUII patrols looking for impaired drivers." As for speeding in a School Zone, tickets vary depending on the severity. With fines double, the average ticket will cost around $300 for violators. |
