NORTH BEND, Ore. -Trying to get the upper hand on flu season, Coos County Public Health is encouraging folks to be proactive and get a jump start on the seasonal flu.

Despite the thousands of H1N1 shots administered by County Health Officials last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the virus will still be circulating this year. But in an effort to off-set the numbers, Public Health Coordinator Lena Hawtin says this years seasonal flu vaccine will also include an H1N1 strain.

"The seasonal vaccine usually has three strains that it protects against and it includes last year's H1N1 pandemic," said Hawtin.

She encourages anyone six months and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible, as it takes a couple weeks to take effect and flu season generally peaks in November.

As of right now, Coos County Public Health is offering flu shots on an appointment basis, accepting most forms of health care or offering a discounted $20 cash fee for those without insurance.

To make an appointment, you can call (541) 756-2020 ext. 510
