Sen. Wyden looks to surge South Coast economy

COOS BAY, Ore. -With the election behind U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, he's now turning his focus back towards the issues of Oregonians, and wrappings up his Town Hall meetings along the South Coast this week.

The Oregon Democrat was at the Coos Bay City Council Chambers Friday Morning, primarily to discuss anything related to the economy on the South Coast.

One of the big blunders this year was the fishing season, in which Oregon's Governor submitted a request for Disaster Relief funds. Wyden's staff also sent their support but he hopes they can eventually make gains on the water later.

"I think it's a combination of catch shares, get folks back into the water," said Wyden. He adds, "Making sure that the research projects are really structured so that fishing families are in a position to be part of them."

Aside from business taxes, audience members addressed availability in renewable energy and Wyden's support in the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal, out on the North Spit.

Wyden says he believes Oregon can work together to use this energy in a safe and beneficial way, but that first, the state needs to gain control back from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

"Lets bring together everybody from energy developers, to home owners to ranchers to environmentalist folks," said Wyden. "And that's why I feel so strongly about getting it out of Washington D.C., where these special interest lobbies for oil and gas get to call all the shots, and getting it home."

Wyden will wrap up his town hall meeting this weekend in Josephine County.
