'Dirty Jobs' comes to south coast

Coquille- With the dirty combination of sawdust, muddy lots and sharp saws, it's no wonder the Winter Lake shingles mill in Coquille caught the eye of a Discovery Channel show.

The production team from the Discovery Channel show 'Dirty Jobs' spent the week on the south coast, hunting down the filthiest and sometimes dangerous jobs around.

Owners of the lumber company Mike and Levi Gardner spent 10 hours with the crew on Thursday, showing them the gritty truth of what goes into crafting wood shingles.

Levi says, "(Mike Rowe) picked things up pretty quick. He'd never picked things up with a log loader before, but he got right in there and I told him what did what and went right about it like he'd done it before."

Mike adds, "It's everyday for us, but it was definitely unnerving for him to get up near those saws and heavy equipment."

Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe really worked the yard, moving logs with the loader and sawing down the singles.

Gardner is interested to see what will happen to business once the show airs in a few months.

Mike says, "We were just wondering what kind of impact it's going to have. We're a small company and we don't have real high production and pretty much everything we make is sold."

The Dirty Jobs crew also spent part of the week at a Bandon cranberry bog, watching the harvest process.
