Giving thanks to South Coast food pantries

Thursday - The Thanksgiving holiday marks a time to give thanks and for some area families in need, it's the help from South Coast food pantries that they're thankful for.

For the past year, North Bend resident Sherrie Baldwin has been relying on food from the 7th Day Adventist Food Pantry in Coos Bay to help feed her family, after they hit hard times.

"We can come here once a month to get a big box of food," says Baldwin. "Then we can come every Tuesday for the free bread. It's just helped us not knowing that we won't go to bed hungry every night."

Baldwin's family is one of about 35 to 60 low-income families that this pantry provides food to each week.

But the pantry's director Juanita Epping says it's been tough to help this year, since the need has increased, but the supply is low.

According to Epping, the U.S. Government is no longer providing them with as much food as years past, so they're in constant need of pasta, beans, rice, and canned foods to help fill their shelves.

"We're always busy here," says Epping. "We can't give out what we don't have so we ask the community if they'd be willing to help us."

This pantry is one of 33 food pantry and emergency meal sites in the South Coast Food Share network for Coos and Curry counties.
