North Bend - Coos Elderly Services holds a gala of grand proportions at Baycrest Village Friday evening, in part to honor a very special guest who guided the program from its humble beginnings.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Sister Mary Laetice, RSM, who retired in Omaha, Nebraska last year after founding Coos Elderly Services in 1991, working with the program for over 16 years.

Sister Laetice says she began the social services program because she saw a need in the community.

"I saw people that needed help, and when you see someone in need, you help them. We started taking care of a little old lady down on Tenth Street who needed help with her finances and grocery shopping, and the business kind of just developed that way," says Laetice.

Since it was founded, the program has served over 220 seniors and people with disabilities in protecting their security and managing their financial affairs.

Sister Laetice says she hopes that her passion to give back to those in need and her faith has left a lasting impact on others in the community.

Coos Elderly Services continues to be one of the pioneering social services program in Southwestern Oregon.
