Teenage author sets example for other school kids
COOS BAY - Oh, the Places You'll Go is a classic Dr. Seuss book and a message that rings true for one young author, who spoke with Coos Bay school kids Thursday, hoping to inspire them to follow their goals.

Students at Sunset Middle School filled the library to hear from 19-year-old featured author Janna Nickerson.

She's a junior at the University of Montana and is touring the country to share her two books, "The Eyes of War" "Faces of Sorrow" that she began writing at the age of 13.

Nickerson says, she always wanted to be an author and decided to self-publish her books, after not being able to land a deal with a publishing company.

Since then, she's sold 3,000 copies of her first book, proving that determination can go a long way.

"If you work hard, you can accomplish your dreams," says Nickerson. "It's not just going to happen, you have to work really hard. That's what I'm doing. I'm working hard to accomplish my dreams of being a published author, doing well in a career in writing."

Along with sharing her experiences, Nickerson talked about her fantasy books, which, she says, are similar to Harry Potter, Eragon and Lord of the Rings.

Her next stop will be a book signing at Books by the Bay in North Bend on Saturday. That book store as well as Sunset Middle School will be selling them for $15.
