Coast Guard rescue at Lighthouse beach

By Britt Carlson

CHARLESTON- A cool walk on the beach turns into much more than one couple bargained for on Wednesday, as the Coast Guard makes an emergency rescue near Lighthouse Beach.

Around Noon Wednesday, Liesl and Frank Schneible were hiking around Lighthouse Beach near Sunset Bay, when Frank slipped and seriously injured himself.

Liesl says, "His leg broke, it snapped. He said it felt like it went in four places and we heard it pop. There just happened to be enough signal to be able to call from the beach and there's not usually."

Charleston Fire was the first to respond and once Captain Rusty Shield saw the size and condition of Schneible, he knew they'd need the help of the North Bend and Charleston Coast Guard stations.

Shield says, "I saw the size of the gentlemen and I made the decision to call the helio to lift him out, because there's no way we could've gotten up here with out a lot of people."

It took only a matter of minutes for rescue workers to get Schneible into the helicopter and off to Bay Area Hospital.

The only reported injury was a broken leg, but Shield advises all people to use extreme caution when accessing the beach, especially on rainy days when the rocks are slick and dangerous.
