COOS BAY - For the second time in the past three years, a local Oregon State Police trooper is recognized for his commitment to drug enforcement.

Local Trooper Freddie Dunlap was named "2007 DRE Officer of the Year" earlier this month at the DUII Multi-Disciplinary Driving Training Conference in Bend.

Dunlap has been a certified Drug Recognition Expert since 2002 and is trained to detect, apprehend, and assist in prosecuting drug-impaired drivers in the community.

"DRE officers go through a lot of training. We go through and identify people who are impaired on controlled substances," says Dunlap.

Last year, Dunlap made 68 DUII arrests, including 35 for driving under the influence of drugs.

Dunlap also made 58 drug interdiction's, 24 of which are felony drug cases.

This award is given out annually to a DRE officer from a municipal, county and state law enforcement agency.
