NORTH BEND - The controversial issue over the proposed liquefied natural gas terminal on the North Spit, turns to talk of a key component of the project facing a lot of opposition from the public.

The Pacific Connector Gas Pipeline Project was the topic of discussion at an open house held Monday evening at the Mill Casino, Hotel.

The purpose of the night was to inform landowners and the public about the components of the proposed 230 mile pipeline, which would deliver one billion cubic feet of liquefied natural gas per day from the Jordan Cove terminal to a hub in Malin, Oregon.

"We've filed out FERC application for the preferred pipeline route. We're expecting our Draft of Environmental Impact Study to be issued by FERC sometime this summer. This is really just an opportunity to tell the public how they can get involved in this process and voice their opinion," says Project Manager Dan Lattin.

Lattin says a similar pipeline, the Northwest Pipeline, has been running from Portland to Grants Pass for over 50 years with no major environmental or human impacts.

Still members of the Citizens Against LNG are voicing their opposition.

"I think this open house is something that the pipeline company had to do because FERC told them they had to. What they need to do it prove the need in this area for something like this," says Citizens Against LNG Executive Director Jody McCaffree.

Lattin says if the project is approved in late 2009, it will take two years to build.
