Coos Bay school district looking to explore cost-saving measures

COOS BAY - After facing a significant budget shortfall this year, the Coos Bay School District is now reviewing options to prevent it from happening again.

According to Superintendent Bob De La Vergne, declining student enrollment numbers, higher fuel and energy costs, and the usual increase in salary and benefits, all left the district with a $1 million shortfall heading into this year's budget review.

But after several meetings, they've reached a balanced budget, which will be finalized this month. The budget has fewer staff positions, since many are leaving or retiring, and less projects and supplies.

"Administration put their first cuts on there," says De La Vergne. "We cut $400,000 from this building and programs we controlled. Then the rest of the buildings brought their cuts up that they decided they were willing to do. Now, $1.4 million is on the table so we solved it one week."

To plan in advance for next year, De La Vergne says they're now exploring several cost-saving measures, including possibly consolidating some positions and cutting back on extra-curricular programs.

"Can we maintain the same level of service but do it all cheaper," asks De La Vergne. "Can you take one bus instead of two buses? Can you try and have games on the same day? There are a lot of costs associated with our programs."

But, he adamantly says, that nothing is yet set in stone, as they're now forming a new committee to get everyone's feedback on what exactly will be done for future budget planning.
