Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony honors fallen, injured in line of duty
By Kristina Nelson
REEDSPORT - Remembering those that have given their life to their badge, and those who've been injured in the line of duty, the local community and area law enforcement officers come together to reflect and say thanks.
This week marks Police Memorial Week and to honor the occasion, Reedsport Police and Fire officials, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard held their annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony. Reedsport Police Chief Shawn Essex says the ceremony was a time to remember those officers closer to home, who have given the ultimate sacrifice, including Marion County Deputy Kelly Fredenburg, who was killed last summer. After a brief prayer and a few words, there was a 21 gun salute as well as the playing of taps. The Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony was started in 1995 by former Reedsport Police Chief John Smart. |
