Mailing costs increase Monday

COOS BAY - In case you're not aware of it, just a friendly reminder that it will cost you a little more to send that letter via U.S. Mail.

Starting Monday, all mailing costs will go up at least a penny, including regular mail, which will now require a 42-cent stamp.

If you don't have the proper amount, the post office will send it back to you or charge the customer who is receiving it.

It's all part of the Postal Act of 2006, which requires all post offices to adjust their rates every year due to inflation. With fuel prices up, that means an increase in mailing costs.

According to Coos Bay Postmaster Kelly Muntifering, that rate increase doesn't appear to be going away in the near future.

"Instead of having one large adjustment every 3-4 years, now there's going to be a series of small adjustments tied to the rate of inflation," says Muntifering. "They will look at it and announce it every February. It will go into effect every May, so this is something we've got to get used too."

For those who may not want to worry about putting on that extra one cent stamp, there is the forever stamp, which retains its price when it's bought.

Muntifering says, more than 10 billion of those stamps have been sold nationwide, with 50,000 purchased in Coos Bay alone.

They also have an abundance of one cent stamps, in case you just want to buy those.
