John McCain visits Portland
Sen. John McCain signs a wind turbine blade during a visit to Portland while Gov. Ted Kulongoski awaits his turn to sign. By KVAL Web StaffPORTLAND, Ore. - Sen. John McCain toured a school for wind turbine technicians in Portland with Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Democratic superdelegate who supports Hillary Clinton. McCain arrived shortly after noon at Vestas Business Academy in Northeast Portland and was met outside the facility by Kulongoski; Jens Soby, president of Vestas America; and Shawn Melander, vice president of Vestas Business Academy. Kulongoski and the two Vestas officials welcomed McCain to Oregon. McCain told the company officials, "I've been reading all about you. Congratulations." To Kulongoski, he said, "I'm so glad to see you. Semper Fi," a reference to Kulongoski's service in the Marine Corps. They walked over to a giant turbine blade on a flatbed truck in the parking lot. The Vestas officials talked to them for a while and then they walked up metal stairs to the blade. Both McCain and Kulongoski signed their names and titles on the blade. Then they climbed back down and walked around a corner to check out a "V90 Nacelle," which houses the equipment up by the blade. Then they visited a classroom where 10 technicians were being trained to service Vestas turbines around North America. McCain, saying he was operating under the theory that "there's no such thing as a dumb question" asked how many technicians it took for each turbine. Melander said there was about one technician for each four or five turbines. Melander said all of them work about 300 feet off the ground during the day to reduce down time for the turbines, which mostly operate at night.
