Coquille couple married for 70 years

COQUILLE - They're living proof that marriages can endure well into your golden years, as a Coquille couple celebrates their 70th year wedding anniversary.

It was at a church gathering in Bunker Hill in 1936, when 89-year-old Mary Stevens and her husband, 94-year-old Tom, first laid eyes on each other. Now this month, they're celebrating 70 years of wedded bliss.

They've been flooded with cards from loved ones and those, they don't know, all who want to wish them well on their milestone.

"Everyone who has been congratulating us, they feel this is a good thing to do," says Mary. "I keep telling people just keep going and you'll make it too."

Mary, who's a 1937 North Bend High School graduate, and Tom, who's a 1933 Coquille High alum, were married on May 8. They're known for owning the stationary store in downtown for several years.

They say, that although marriage life isn't easy, they've been able to stay committed by making it a team effort.

"If you cooperate and you overlook all the minor things that may irritate you, you just ignore those and look at the good side," says Tom.

The Stevens have six children, 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, with two more on the way. They celebrated their anniversary with a reception at Coquille Christian Community Church.
