Cable channel spotlights New Carissa in new series

COOS BAY - KCBY isn't the only camera crew at the New Carissa site this week, as a cable channel is planning to put the shipwreck in the national spotlight.

A crew from the National Geographic Channel was out shooting video for an upcoming one-hour show, devoted to the New Carissa removal.

The episode is part of a six-show series, focusing on ocean salvage, titled "Salvage Code Red."

The crew says, the New Carissa was picked since it had many fascinating technical aspects to it, including the engineering of the barges and installing the cable car.

"It's going to be challenging for Titan to take it apart because it's been sitting there for 10 years now," says Crew Member Frank Vilaca. "It's rusted and there are bits and pieces coming off of it."

This is the last shipwreck that they will film in the series. The other episodes will show ocean salvage efforts in other parts of the world, including Indonesia, Japan and Mexico.

The series will begin airing in the Fall on the National Geographic Channel. It's not yet known if it will also be featured in the magazine.
