Highlighting Prefontaine's letter at Olympic trials
By Azenith Smith
COOS BAY - Earlier this month, KCBY told you how local volunteers are heading to the Olympic Trials in Eugene to help promote the South Coast and Steve Prefontaine's legacy.
To help them with their mission, they're now bringing along a special never before seen letter written by Prefontaine himself. The letter was written to former Marshfield High School Head Coach Walt McClure. It's dated March 17, 1975, just before Pre's death. In the letter, Prefontaine talks about training for the 1976 Olympics with running mate Frank Shorter in Denver and getting ready for the tough competition from Finland. Coos Bay North Bend Visitors and Convention Bureau Director Katherine Hoppe says, they've had the letter for months, but thought the trails would be a perfect time to showcase it. "Having this letter and being able to share it with so many of his fans, it's just exciting," says Hoppe. "It's kind of getting to know a little more about Prefontaine and some of his thoughts. It's kind of a personal glimpse of his life. I think for a lot of people, it just brings back of memories they had of Prefontaine." This is just one aspect of what the South Coast booth will have at the trials, along with old photos and racing programs of Prefontaine. The booth, sponsored by the Mill Casino and Oregon's Adventure Coast, will be open during festival hours starting Friday. Steve's sister will also be making an appearance at the trials on Saturday and on July 5. If you can't make it to the trials, you can also view the letter online next week at www.oregonadventurecoast.com. |
