Local high school students learn how to cook from culinary students at OCCI

By Kristina Nelson

COOS BAY - Local high school students we're learning the meaning of slaving over a hot meal on Wednesday, getting educated in the basics of cooking at Oregon Coast Culinary Institute.

The students are part of the Upward Bound Program at Southwestern Oregon Community College.

It's a six week course that gives them an opportunity to take college level classes and do extra-curricular activities, like cooking at OCCI.

The Upward Bound students did get a little help from OCCI students who showed them the basics of preparing a meal.

Afterwards, the kids enjoyed what they'd cooked including fried chicken, candied carrots and hot wings.

This is the first time OCCI has partnered with Upward Bound and chef and instructor Shawn Hanlin says he hopes to make it an annual tradition.
