ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A high-speed chase took a wrong turn Thursday when a suspect tried to flee police by driving south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, narrowly missing head-on collisions with other drivers.

Police arrested Steven Christopher Roddy, 41, of Roseburg, Ore., after a chase through Roseburg onto I-5 that literally went the wrong way for a while.

Sheriff's deputies were able to stop traffic and reduce the danger.

No one was injured.

The situation started when the 911 center received a call from an employee of Oregon Tool and Supply stating that a male subject had just stolen a generator from in front of their store. The employee was following the vehicle north on Northeast Stephens Street.

A Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy spotted the vehicle near Hooker Road and Northeast Stephens Street. The vehicle refused to yield and a pursuit began.

Officers pursued the vehicle north on Northeast Stephens at speeds exceeding 80 mph. The driver of the suspect vehicle passed cars on both sides of Northeast Stephens Street, according to the sheriff's office.

The vehicle entered the freeway and drove north at speeds of 100 mph, again passing vehicles on the right and left sides of the northbound lanes.

The vehicle exited the freeway, then re-entered driving south in the northbound lanes.

The vehicle narrowly missed hitting several vehicles head on as it drove south in the northbound lanes, according to the sheriff's office.

Spike strips were deployed on I-5, flattening one of the vehicle's tires as it passed.

Police stopped traffic on I-5. As the suspect vehicle approached the stopped traffic, it drove into the median and attempted to spin around. An Oregon State Police sergeant attempted to pin the vehicle into the median in an effort to end the pursuit.

The vehicle spun free and drove back onto the freeway northbound and then down the embankment on the east side of I-5. The vehicle became stuck trying to cross a ditch.

The driver of the vehicle ran from the scene but was apprehended in the parking lot of Kamper Korner on Old Highway 99 North. The driver was identified as Roddy. He was arrested and taken to the Douglas County Jail and lodged.
