Saving money at the Coos County Fair
By Azenith Smith
MYRTLE POINT - With all the carnival rides, tasty treats and fun souvenirs, it's easy to spend more money than you'd like.
"I think I've bought new a new pair of sunglasses at the fair for the past three years," says 13-year-old Emily Peck. It's the carnival rides that usually cost the most money, since most rides cost $3-4 each time you ride them. One way to save on rides is to purchase the wristband that offers unlimited rides for $25. Food is one of the biggest things that fairgoers often spend their money on. Whether it be a corn dog, candy apple or maybe some breakfast, one of the things you can do is to share you food with a family member or a friend. Another way to save money on food is to eat beforehand, so you're less likely to purchase a lot of food at the fair. With games, Mom Naomi Cicarelli plays all the games in the exhibits to get the free prizes. She says the kids feel like their getting something without having to buy anything. And who says, you have to spend money to have a good time. There's also a lot of things you can do for free. "The Toddler Olympics is free, the birthing center is free," says Fair Manager Cindy Bedingfield. "Brad's World of Reptiles is free. The stingray show is free. The train is free." When it comes to getting to the fair, save up on gas by carpooling or taking the shuttle from the Pony Village Mall in North Bend to the fair for little cost. But, the best advice is to set a budget for yourself and plan ahead. "Before you even look in the booth, make sure you have something in your mind that you want to buy," says 15-year-old Aubrae Hathaway. "If you don't, you usually end up looking around and buying a lot of stuff you don't need." And perhaps, put all your money in an envelope, only use what you have and then when it's gone, you're done for the day. |
