Sport fishermen donate big catch to the hungry
By Tim Novotny
CHARLESTON, Ore. - The tuna is on the way. A couple of weeks after the Oregon Tuna Classic held their first event on the South Coast, the Charleston catch was turned over to the South Coast Food Share.
The South Coast Tuna Classic event, held August 9, was one of four tournaments held on the Oregon Coast throughout July and August. The goal was to provide fresh tuna to regional food banks of the Oregon Food Bank, which includes South Coast Food Share, an Oregon Coast Community Action program. On Wednesday, nearly 4,000 pounds of fresh canned tuna was handed over at Chuck's Seafood in Charleston, where the canning took place. The over 4,000 cans of high protein tuna fish will go into emergency food boxes and meals for hungry families throughout Coos and Curry counties. Dells Stevens, the Tuna Classic State Director, and Jim Pex, the local organizer, said this year's tournament was a success and they will be back next year. The statewide group will also be making a cash donation from all of their events later this year. It's expected that as many as 2,000 people in this region will be served by the Tuna Classic canned food donation. |
