Labor Day 2008 the deadliest in a decade
By KVAL Web StaffUNDATED -- Labor Day 2008 was the deadliest in a decade on Oregon roads as Oregon State Police raised the death toll to 11 after receiving a report of a fatal motorcycle accident in Lakeside, Ore. The 11 traffic deaths make this year's holiday period the seventh deadliest since 1970 and the deadliest since 1997, when 11 people died.
The latest known fatal traffic crash occurred Saturday, Aug. 30, at approximately 11:57 p.m. and took the life of Robert Henry Clark Langler, 45, from Lakeside, Ore. Since 1970, an average of seven people die each year on Oregon roads over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Last year, only six people died over Labor Day weekend. In 2005, 10 people died in crashes, which was believed to be the deadliest Labor Day weekend of the decade prior to today's report. Police originally believed nine people died over this year's holiday weekend, making it the second-deadliest in a decade. That news brought forward reports of two more fatalities, bringing the total to 11. Two others died in traffic crashes on Friday, Aug. 29, prior to the official reporting period's 6 p.m. start, including a Waldport man injured Friday at noon who died Sunday from his injuries. The following is a brief review of this year's fatality crashes: * On Friday, Aug. 29, at approximately 8:10 p.m. a 39-year old female died when her sport utility vehicle left the highway in the 35000 block of South Sawtell Road in the Molalla area and struck a power pole. The victim was using safety restraints and alcohol is a possible contributing factor. Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigating agency. * On Saturday, Aug. 30, at approximately 12:40 a.m. two unidentified men died when their sport utility vehicle flipped off the west end of the St. Johns Bridge in Portland. Safety restraint use information is not available and the cause remains under investigation. Portland Police Bureau is the lead investigating agency. * On Saturday, Aug. 30, at approximately 2:58 a.m. a 59-year old man and 60-year old woman died when the car crashed into a light pole at the intersection of SE 10th Street and SE Walnut Street in Hillsboro. Safety restraint use information is not available and the cause is under investigation. The Washington County interagency crash investigation team is leading the investigation. * On Saturday, Aug. 30, at approximately 2:05 p.m. a 37-year old Caldwell, Idaho, man, MIguel Ramirez, died after losing control of his sport utility vehicle northbound on Highway 395 near milepost 48 and rolled multiple times. The victim was using safety restraints and the cause remains under investigation. Oregon State Police is the lead investigating agency.
On Sunday, Aug 31, at approximately 3:15 p.m. a 64-year old San Rafael, Calif., man, Leonard Eugene Olson Jr., died after driving off Highway 101 near milepost 206 and colliding with a tree. The victim was not using safety restraints and the cause remains under investigation. Oregon State Police is the lead investigating agency. On Sunday, Aug. 31, James Clifford Klum, 34, from Tigard was westbound on the Izee-Paulina Highway in Grant County in far eastern Oregon. Klum's truck left the pavement and he overcorrected, sending his Ford F250 back across both lanes of travel and rolling down a steep embankment. Klum's 9-year old daughter, Mikayla Klum, was riding in the pickup's back seat and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Klum and his 6-year old daughter, Alexis, were transported to Blue Mountain Hospital by ambulance where they were treated and released. All occupants were using safety restraints. |
