LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. - A game of flag football turned deadly Tuesday during recess at a Lake Oswego elementary school.

An 11-year-old student at Palisades Elementary was hit in the throat with a football and started having trouble breathing, according to Lake Oswego Schools Superintendent Bill Korach. The fifth grade boy collapsed, and teachers and officials tried to help him.

Medical crews responded to the school at 1500 Greentree Road shortly after noon and took the student to Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin, said Gert Zoutendijk, a Lake Oswego Fire Department spokesman.

At some point, the boy died, Zoutendijk said. The student's name was not released.

School officials sent an e-mail to parents on the incident.
