CHARLESTON, Ore. -Boaters are facing more regulations on the water this year but some organizations are putting a positive spin on the required classes.are putting a positive spin on the required classes...

As of now, anyone operating a boat or watercraft of more than ten horsepower must have a Boater Education card. While some class requirements can be met in a matter of eight hours, Power Squadron of Coos Bay is offering a more elaborate course for interested boaters.

According to Cdr. Arthur Schuldt, "The longer course gives you basics in compass work, chart work and also an introduction to electronic navigation, which is the coming thing."

Power Squadron has been putting up signs like these all over the South Coast to remind boaters of the new law, something you're not going to want to overlook.

"If they forget about it, they'll run into a Marine Deputy and they'll be paying $97, so they better not forget about it," says Schuldt.

Squadron's boating course is scheduled to begin Jan. 19 at 6:30 pm. The six, two and a half hour sessions will be held on Mondays and Thursdays for a total fee of $30.
