Facts about hunger in Coos County:

• 46 percent of households had at least one member working.
   
• 52 percent cite the high cost of food as the reason why they seek food assistance
   
• 40 percent cite the high cost of fuel and heat, up from 31 percent in 2006 and 21 percent in 2002.
   
• 25 percent cite high medical costs.
   
• 25 percent cite low wages.
   
• 23 percent cite high rent or mortgage.
   
• 11 percent cite a recent job loss.

Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA) was founded as part of the Community Action movement in 1965 during the War on Poverty.

Our agency works with the low-income people of Coos and Curry counties on the southern Oregon coast to provide a wide range of emergency and stabilization services.   

South Coast Food Share (SCFS) is the regional food bank and the ORCCA program in charge of emergency food distribution throughout our service area.

As a regional food bank within the statewide Oregon Food Bank Network, ORCCA works with 32 local member agencies in Coos and Curry counties.

The network services an average of 5,286 people each month through the distribution of 1,671 emergency food boxes. The network also provides over 7,700 meals each month. South Coast Food Share is home to the state's first Snack Pack program. The Share Bear Snack Pack program provides supplimentary food for 150 children each week throughout the school year.
