New Community Garden being built in Coquille to feed the hungry
By Tim NovotnyCOQUILLE, ORE - A place to work and grow is sprouting up in Coquille, in the shadow of the Pioneer United Methodist Church, who happened to donate the land, and it will soon be helping to feed the hungry. MultimediaBut for right now, it is solely a place to work, as the Pioneer Coquille Community Garden is just beginning to take shape. Helping to whip it into shape is the Coquille Rotary Club, who put on a Rotarians at Work day last weekend. Rotary member Laura Jo Hofsess says they were building the beds and will be putting in the plumbing, "and getting them filled and plant them and then the community will be able to enjoy the harvest." There will be a total of 19 raised beds inside a fenced area when they are done, three of which will be built specifically for wheelchair-bound gardeners. Darlene Judd with the Coquille Community Garden Association says a separate perimeter garden will be maintained specifically to help grow produce for local food pantries. "It's been a little over a year ago, Michael Meeks decided that he thought there should be a community garden, and so he went putting fliers out and talking to people. And there is a real need for food in this area...so we partnered with Rotary, with the Methodist Church, with South Coast Community Garden Association, and we're all working together to help build the garden. And we'll be donating some of that food to the Food Banks here in our area." There is still plenty of work to do before they hope to open this garden in June, and so any donations of time or supplies, like compost, is still welcome.
