COOS BAY, Ore.- Big Bowls make for a cool place to skate but also a dangerous one.

This summer local police are a little concerned about more injuries than usual so they want youngsters to ride carefully. Captain Gary McCullough with Coos Bay PD say the major thing is that kids need to use protective equipment that may not necessarily be required and that's a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads.

Kids under the age of 16 are required to wear helmets and parents agree. "I really do believe that he should wear a helmet but I do not really have any concern about him skating at all..." says local grandparent Linda Wallace.

Officers say wearing protective gear can shield kids from serious head injuries and injuries to the arms and knees, especially when a trick may not go as planned.
