REEDSPORT, Ore. - The expansion of the new Reedsport wastewater treatment facility is right on track, as construction crews work round the clock to upgrade the facility.

The $14 million expansion project to the existing wastewater treatment facility began in early 2008.

Reedsport City Manager Scott Somers says the project came about after the Department of Environmental Quality requested that the plant be expanded.

"We're required to do this project from the Department of Environmental Quality because we were exceeding the limitations of our discharge into the Umpqua River between 1997 and the year 2000. Our particles were exceeding going into the river. Until we increase the capacity of our plant, we would continue to discharge and violate our permit," says Somers.

The treatment plant currently serves residents in Gardiner and Reedsport.

Somers says with the expansion, the new facility shouldn't need any more upgrades for a while.

"We're pretty much expected to be able to utilize this facility until we have a population that were serving of 12,500 people, right now we serve about 6,000 people. We've got different aeration basins being built, we've got a new officer and lab, we've got different holding cells and capacities being constructed."

The construction on the site is scheduled to be done by spring of 2010.
