BANDON, Ore. - Crabbers get ready, the third annual Bandon Crab Derby is just around the corner, and when it's all said and done, you could be $1,000 richer just for catching one.

Starting this Wednesday, anyone crabbing in Bandon, who catches a crab with a brass ring attached to it, is eligible for prizes and money.

The derby, is the brainchild of Bandon resident Dave Schradieck, who says he and his wife thought up the clever competition.

"We started it because we own some vacation rentals and our guests were saying, what's there to do in town and there wasn't any kite festivals or fishing festivals or anything really going on and Bandon is really well known for it's Dungeness Crab and crabbing."

Over the next two months, Schradieck will be throwing close to 120 crabs, in the bay just off the Bandon Boardwalk.

Folks who catch one of the crabs, with the ring attached, can take it to Tony's Crab Shack where they will be entered into a drawing to win prizes, including the grand prize of $1,000.

And Schradieck says based on years passed, the chances of catching one of the elusive crabs is pretty high.

"There's a great chance. Last year we had one person caught I think four or five crabs with tags. He had four tags so i mean its, if you're out here crabbing on the docks or in your boat in Bandon, there's a real good chance you're gonna catch a crab."

The crab derby start this Wednesday July 1st and runs through September 6th.
