The Mill Casino Hotel is getting more green
By Erica Rush, KCBY News
NORTH BEND, Ore. -Their not exactly green machines but the The Mill Casino Hotel in North Bend is giving a little more back to the environment through renewable energy, thus making it a more winning experience for it's patrons and employees.
Not one to gamble on the future of our environment, the casino recently purchased 750,000 Kilowatts of power, per month, through Pacific Power's new 'Blue Sky' program. That's comparable to about 75 average households. Still this is only a portion of the casino's power consumption, but this one step will prevent around 6,500 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year. According to Communications Director, Ray Doering, "If you go through a casino, you'll see, we use quite a bit of electricity. We consume quite a bit of energy here and it's something we want to do to minimize our impact and footprint." But this isn't the only means the Mill Casino has embarked on, in an effort to preserve resources and protect the environment. Starting with everything from a recycling program, to transforming cooking oils into bio-diesel and even re-using waste materials from their construction sites. According to Doering, this is keeping in-line with the spirit of their tribal partners. "The Coquille Tribe has always revered the land. It has always been part of their policy to engage in sustainable practices whenever possibly, to honor the earth, the land, the sky."
