REEDSPORT, ORE - The former Chief of Police in Reedsport, John Smart, has agreed to take over as Interim Chief after Shawn Essex suddenly resigned last week, apparently over management styles.

In a memo to the Mayor and City Council reporting on the resignation, City Manager Scott Somers, who came on board himself last year, said "anytime a change in management occurs, the possibility exists that variations in management styles will arise."

The memo also indicated that Essex and his family had long term plans to move to Kentucky and that the decision came about for them to make that move sooner rather than later, with Somers wishing them the best.

Now the process of finding a new Chief will begin and it will be a big one, not to be rushed. Somers added in the memo that the search would be viewed as one of the most critical decisions by the City of Reedsport in 2009 and possibly 2010.
